Nestled against the Chattahoochee National Forest, this charming one bedroom cabin will surprise and delight you with thoughtful details, modern luxuries, and a warm, at-home feel Lisa and Willard drove up from Atlanta for a long weekend to celebrate their tenth anniversary. They instantly fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains, the quaint towns, the winding mountain roads, and the leisurely pace of mountain life. By the time Sunday night rolled around, they were talking about buying land. Fifteen years later, they own ten acres in Suches, and just finished building The Bird House — which was meant to be Lisa’s She-Shed, but quickly evolved into the beautiful cabin you’re reading about now. Lisa tells me that one day she and Willard will give up the main house to their daughter and move into the cabin, full time, but until then, folks can enjoy this magical little home — judging from the 40 five-star reviews (some accompanied by guests saying this was the best property they have ever experienced) many have.

There are countless differences between a rental and a home built by and for specific people. Families. Couples. Friends.

You’ll love how seamlessly the antique family heirlooms flow with modern pieces, such as the cozy brand-new leather sofa, because Lisa and Willard do. When you choose this stunning cabin you, like Lisa, will deeply appreciate a kitchen perfectly outfitted for the chef ready to roll up their sleeves and get cooking — to say nothing of the fresh sage, parsley, lavender, rosemary, basil, thyme, and oregano you will pick from the garden to flavor your meals. This may be a good time to mention that when Lisa’s hens are feeling productive, guests get fresh free-range eggs.

“We have traveled all over and stayed at some AirBnb’s where you’d be hard-pressed to find more than a set of plastic salad tongs and a stale packet of Lipton tea,” Lisa told me when we spoke about The Bird House. “Willard and I built a place where we, ourselves, would be happy to stay.”

They sure did. And it looks like they’d be happy to stay somewhere with: a full k-cup and carafe coffee brewing system, a powerful generator (no outages), a welcome snack basket and condiments, tankless water heater (never runs out of hot water), games, a little library, and dog bowls, beds, blankets, and treats (L&W are dog owners, obviously).

When I asked her if there is anything else her future guests should know, Lisa told me that The Bird House is perfect for people who want to feel cozy and have every convenience and comfort, while feeling gloriously secluded/surrounded by nature. Deer, raccoons, bears, and wild turkeys visit their property, and if the season is right, Lisa and Willard provide deer corn.

This little cabin is so peaceful. Being able to fall asleep to the sound of the creek and waking to the sound of birds, there's nothing more peaceful. The porch off the bedroom was what made it so special. We will return when we have more time.

A little hiccup with the check-in, but it was quickly rectified. It would have been nice to have had a little grassy area, instead of just gravel.

My boyfriend and I had a great staycation this past weekend. We live south of Atlanta and wanted an easy mountain get away and I’m so glad we chose to stay at the Bird House. We arrived Friday night and packed food to make a crab seafood boil. Then we enjoyed the rain on the back bedroom covered porch. My dog loved his time away as well. He was greeted with a dog bed, blankets and a bone and he also loved bird watching from the porch. Saturday morning it was raining and so beautiful being in nature next to the sounds of the river flowing. We drank our coffee on the rocking chairs and we cooked a nice breakfast to go. We had a great hike on the Appalachian trail and then went to a local tavern for a quick bite. The food was really good and friendly service and we met other hikers who just started their 6 month quest to Maine. It’s such a quaint, small town in the beautiful mountains. On our way home we stopped at a vineyard that also was incredible. Thank you for our perfect weekend.
